Yesterday, I went to JoAnn Fabrics to score some Lizbeth thread, which I recently learned they were carrying. Lizbeth thread is 100 percent Egyptian cotton and is a dream to tat with. After the short but determined trip to JoAnn’s, my husband and I stopped at Border’s books and had some over-boiled and burnt coffee, and I was inspired to tat while sipping on said burnt offering. Regardless of the state of modern “gourmet” coffee, we had a great time, and this piece was the result of a nice afternoon in the bookstore, which happens to have a better atmosphere than coffee.
I am offering the piece as a giveaway! Leave a comment to enter to win the bookmark. Your comment can be about anything, even a stern disagreement about my coffee opinions! This bookmark was made with Lizbeth Thread, size 20, 100% Egyptian cotton in Blue Med. col. 651. Bookmark measures 6″x1″. I am counting this as #3 for the 25 Motif Challenge.
Drawing will take place March 15, 2010. Good luck!

Wow, now that is something I could use (not the burnt coffee) yuck. But a bookmark, tatted by you, would be a prized possession; it would be on display in the “library” in my bedroom, along with other treasures. I will have to go to Joanne’s havent since they moved to Severna Park – is there any closer? I don’t think so, but which did you go to?
See you in the a.m. PK

Must have been the columbia joann’s…..usually the coffee at border’s is so good! I’m disappointed for you….
Beautiful tatting- I’m quite impressed!

It’s beautiful, what a wonderful giveaway.

Let’s see – you bought a new ball of thread at JoAnn’s, then went to Borders and proceeded to tat a bookmark while having (burnt) coffee! That was some fast tatting! An amazing job – and so beautifully photographed, as usual!
I’m pleased you discovered that JoAnn’s is now carrying Lizbeth thread (although I wish they had more colors). Mabye they will in the future! I was amazed (and delighted) when I first discovered this a few months ago, as they seemed to have stopped carrying any tatting supplies. They also had Janette Baker’s “How to Tat” book (with fabulous DVD), and I almost fell over! They have now redeemed themselves in my eyes!
I’m trying really hard to catch up on your posts! You seem to be knitting up a storm, and although you say you’re a ‘beginner’, I’d say you’ve moved out of that category! Cables and lace require lots of attention, and also fair isle. Are you familiar with the Continental method of knitting (holding yarn in left hand – if you’re right-handed). I knit, crochet and tat (chains) holding my thread the same way (left forefinger holding the thread). Have you tried following charts for lace and cables? Charts make it so much easier for me.
Also, your blog layout is quite impressive and your photos are very artistic. You seem to have a pen collection! I have an interest in calligraphy and admire fancy pens!

Another give-away so soon? I feel like such a slacker! I received my beautiful postcard today… something I must try! I’ll probably blog about it tomorrow.

Beautiful Bookmark. Love the color. I don’t do coffee, left that to my Mom and Dad they could drink pots of it everyday.
March 5th, 2010
I think that’s gorgeous. Hopefully I will someday be able to tat that neatly – not there yet. Do you have a pattern for that bookmark?
March 5th, 2010
I didn’t know that JoAnn’s carried the thread. I will have to check into this
March 6th, 2010
Shirl, the bookmark is beautiful. I was so happy when the Joann’s near me started carrying Lizbeth thread – now I just wish they had more colors!

Beautiful work!! I have been working on that pattern recently.
Funny…, I was musing about bad coffee yesterday in my little mind wondering “why does strong and bitter (very bitter) mean good?”
Peace, John

Yay! Another giveaway. I got my postcard this week and I love it! It’s so nice getting pretty things in the mail.

I have been tatting a long time and tat pretty fast, that book mark was done that afternoon. Now if speed tatting was a sport I might get a medal or at least a decent cup of java. Oh I didn’t look at the books for tatting but will have to do that when I visit JoAnns again.
When learning a new skill I have a crazy method and it does make me crazy at times. Every new project has to have something in it that I have never done before. Goal is Master Knitter, is there a such title, there should be. The Fair Isle hat is the first project that included reading a chart. I was so scared of the chart, so silly cause it’s super easy. Cables had me freaked out a little to, silly again it was way easier than it looks.
Thanks for the comments on my photos, photography has interested me since I was a youngin. Yep dipping pens are another passion, I actually use them often.

Yep it was the Columbia store.
March 6th, 2010
Diane I hope make them! Let me know when you do and we can send them to each other!

Teresa I don’t have a pattern that bookmark sorry.
March 6th, 2010
Lovely bookmark. Sadly I don’t drink coffe; however, I love coffee icecream.
March 6th, 2010
Wow…if that’s what burnt coffee inspired you to do…then I say, “bring it on”. Gotta go get me some of that coffee. That’s just beautiful Shirl.
March 6th, 2010
hahah Wanda I think it was the beautiful thread I just scored and wasn’t gonna let that coffee drag me down.
March 6th, 2010
Oh how very pretty!!! The bookmark that is LOL! I don’t do coffee either, but I have gotten a chance to trying out lizbeth thread and size 40 is my fav. But you are so right, it is really nice thread to tat with! I just wish I lived closer to a joannes.
Thank you for such a beautiful giveaway!

nice, shirl!

I wish I could tatt anywhere- My husband likes my tattings, but dislikes me to tatt when we are together- Impossible for me to tatt while he is driving. Sometimes I feel that I am wasting a lot of time.
About your coffe, I quit taking coffe almost 30 years ago, but I still enjoy a coffe time.
Congrats for your beautiful designs.

Just order my supply of LizBeth online from Handy Hands. I will check our JoAnns, but I do not think they have it yet.
I am just getting started in tatting and would love a bookmark to post in all the reference books I am checking.
Thanks.

This looks like a prized possession which I would deeply cherish. Have not seen anything like this since my grandmother used to do it. Wonderful special piece.
March 8th, 2010
I am sure that whoever wins your piece will treasure it – it is beautiful and what a kind gesture!
The first piece of tatting I saw was about 38 years ago when visiting a cousin of my late husband’s mother. She had the most beautiful tablecloth on her dining room table and told me how she had worked on it while travelling to and from work on the London underground. I wanted to learn how to tat, and did manage to teach myself and made some edging and embellishments for my nephew’s christening gown, but have done little since then. Your bookmark has inspired me to pick up the shuttle again and have another go.

Ann that is great that you are going to pick up your shuttle again. I bet your nephew’s christening gown was beautiful and made a great family heirloom. Tatted table clothes are so beautiful, but thinking about tatting something large is overwhelming.

It’s so beautiful!
I followed you here from Ravelry…I have a bunch of Workbasket magazines my mom gave me, she collected them for the tatting patterns. Neither of us know how, but I’m thinking about trying to learn
March 13th, 2010
Amber you should really try tatting only one knot in tatting, that’s not too bad. That is pretty cool that you have Workbasket magazines, the local used book store had a stack that I picked up for the same reason. Piecework magazine always has a great tatting pattern or two in each publication. Thanks for playing, see ya at Ravelry.

Hi Shirl!
Ann
Really pretty bookmark! It is a testament to your ability that you were able to make something so beautiful with a vile taste in your mouth. Forrest Gump’s mama also could have said, “Life is like a pot of coffee, you never know what you’re gonna get…”
March 13th, 2010
Beautiful bookmark! I’m a beginning tatter, and really hope and aspire to make something like that one day! Off to practice tomorrow!
March 14th, 2010
You have always been so crafty and talented. I hope when I start tatting, my work will be as beautiful as yours!! Nice catching up with you after all these years
Tami

Hello Shirl, Your tatted book mark is truly beautiful. I wish I could learn to tat. Maybe someday. Hugs Judy
April 9th, 2010
The bookmark is beautiful! I’m learning to tat at the moment and have just managed to get over the stage where I feel I’m tying my fingers in knots. I’m having problems with tension and joining. Both seem a bit on the loose side. I appreciate the skill that has gone into making this wonderful bookmark.
May 13th, 2010
Wow! I like it very much! Would you be so kind and share with us the pattern? please
