5.5 inch Strand of Tatted Lace

5in strand

This 5.5 inch strand of lace was made using DMC Cordonnet Special in size 3o.

The pattern says to make a ring, cut and tie but I adjusted the pattern making it continuous.

The pattern can be found in a vintage book called Priscilla Tatting Book No. 1

The book is free and can be found here at Antique Pattern Library.

Traveling with Tatting supplies

Tatting Travel Box 1

We made a huge lifestyle change this year.  In Feb. 2014 we downsized our belongings from a 3000 sq ft home to an RV and a small farm house of 1200 sq ft in Kentucky.  As far as tatting supplies,  I downsized nothing. My book collection was impossible to bring in the RV. So they are at home waiting for me to swap them out as we return.

Plastic containers were the best way to store my supplies.  I have a large one that has the bulk of what I need and a few smaller containers full of nothing but thread.  You just can’t have enough thread, ever.

Here are few pieces that I made since living in the RV.  Sept is when we started traveling and it’s been amazing so far.

Fabric Books

Fabric Books

I have made several fabric books over the summer.

Now let the fun begin with making stuff to put inside.

Before and After Painted Bobbin Lace Pillow

Tamara Webb gifted me a bobbin lace pillow she made in 1985.

Thank you Tamara!!

I just love this little pillow. It’s about the cutest thing ever.

This week I painted cherry blossoms on the back and solid pink on the bottom.

I am calling it my DC pillow.

I can’t wait for the paint to dry so I can start making lace.

I also made a cute little tatted pincushion with a piece white lace Jean Hoadley had gifted me.

Thank you Jean!!

Black tatted bracelets

My latest project has been these black tatted bracelets.

I don’t make a lot of jewelry but these were interesting.

Thread is Lizbeth size 20 in black.

Rust Oil Painting

Oil 16″ x 40″

By Shirley L Hays

It took me 21 hours over 2 days to paint this picture.

Once I started I couldn’t stop until it was finished.

White Cable Throw

This throw started out fun but it took longer than expected.

It took about 2 months to complete.

We had another big move and this is the project I worked on in my spare time.

Yarn: 2 skeins of  Lion Brand Yarns Pound of Love in 100 white.

Needle: size 10 6mm

Pattern: Cabled Classic Throw by Red Heart

Westminster Hat

Westminster Hat is a pattern by Bobbi Intveld.

Yarn used was Royal Petites by Blue Sky Alpacas.

The color is 1700 – Cafe Au Lait.

This yarn is very soft and wonderful to work with.

The pattern was super easy to follow.

I am excited about my new hat!

My first needle lace piece

Starting from an article in PieceWork magazine May/June 2009 issue and two online forums Needle Lace Talk and Lynxlace  I was able to create my first piece of needle lace.

There are lots of mistakes but then it is my first time trying this type of lace making.

I started working the lace by holding it my hands.

It was a little awkward so I made a lace pillow.

The pillow is made by rolling cotton quilt batting tightly.  Then I measured my roll and sewed a covering.

A large knitting needle is used to lift the area being worked.

It seemed to go faster on the pillow since both hands could work the lace.

The method I used for the tracing thread left too much slack or I didn’t have my tension correct.

Either way it was hard to work with and will do the couching method next time.

After the piece is done I cut away the threads between the paper pattern and fabric.

Once the lace is removed from the paper pattern I took a pair of tweezers and removed all the tiny threads from the back.
